This small bronze coin, issued around 103-76 BC, was the tiniest denomination in Jewish currency. It is most famous for its association with a story about Jesus Christ. When a widow donated one of these coins to charity, a merchant mocked her generosity. In response, Jesus remarked (Mark 12:41-44 and Luke 21:1), "This poor widow has put more in than all the others contributing to the treasury." Essentially, the Mite or Prutah held greater value for her than the gold offered by wealthy donors. We offer a fine selection of these small, historically significant bronze coins that are well circulated. They make an excellent gift, as many people are familiar with the legendary Widow’s Mite. While you shouldn't expect anything more than a small, crudely struck bronze coin, what you will have is a meaningful piece of history that resonates in both historical and personal contexts.
