Antique Kissi Pennies – “Coins with a Soul”
Exclusive at the Roman Coin Bank

Discover a remarkable form of early African currency: authentic Kissi Pennies, forged from primitive smelted iron and rich in history and symbolism.

These striking iron objects were traditionally produced from locally smelted iron in Guinea and hand-forged by skilled blacksmiths in Sierra Leone and Liberia. Each piece features the classic characteristics of true Kissi Pennies: a twisted shank, hammered surface, and carefully forged ends—clear evidence of both high-quality iron and expert craftsmanship.

Historically, Kissi Pennies functioned as real money. Around 1900, 30–40 bundles of 20 pieces could purchase a cow, while 60–80 bundles were sufficient for a bride price, underscoring their importance in social and economic life. By 1940, they were no longer accepted for paying taxes or fines, marking the end of their official monetary role—but not their cultural value.

The name Kissi is often translated as “Coin with a Soul”, reflecting the deep respect these objects held within the communities that used them.
