Historically, Kissi Pennies functioned as real money. Around 1900, 30–40 bundles of 20 pieces could purchase a cow, while 60–80 bundles were sufficient for a bride price, underscoring their importance in social and economic life. By 1940, they were no longer accepted for paying taxes or fines, marking the end of their official monetary role—but not their cultural value.
